The Kids@Heart Ride is a 5km ride along the edge of Lake Taupo, and is part of the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.
Many children born with a heart defect are discouraged from contact sports or anything too strenuous on the heart. The Kids@Heart Ride provides a great way for heart kids to get on their bikes and give it a go.
The Kids@Heart Ride is a lot of fun. We gather at the start line as a team in our Heart Rider tee shirts (transport provided from Taupo) and heart kids, heart siblings, mums and dads all ride together in a group. It's on footpaths for most of the way, we cross the big finish line with loads of fanfare, and afterwards we have a barbeque and prizegiving for all the kids in the team.
We see the Kids@Heart Ride as a gentle opportunity for heart kids to get on the bike and give it a go, and heart kids of all abilities aged 12 and under are welcomed to the team, as are their siblings.
